Canadian Colours Equestrian Limited : Breeding and competing modern sport horses and specialist equestrian publishing

Kelly completed her Bachelor of Arts, Communication (Cum Laude) at her home town University of Ottawa, Canada in 2004. Ottawa winters are renowned for temperatures regularly dropping below -20 degrees celcius, a hardship compensated only by the experience of ice skating along the frozen Rideau Canal that runs through the city to attend classes.

Upon graduation, Kelly moved to Toronto and worked as an editorial and publishing intern at This Magazine. Planning launch and fundraising parties, reading literary submissions, researching and writing long format pieces in an old factory above a coffee roaster. And good coffee has been a staple of writing life ever since.

Onwards to a Masters of Arts, Radio at Goldsmiths College University of London in 2006 – and many, many, many job applications later – led to website editor and digital content production roles for Horse&Rider, PONY and Wanderlust magazines in the United Kingdom. During this time, Kelly worked on site development and launch, SEO strategies, email newsletters and e-commerce campaigns, as well as roughly animated ‘give-away’ calendars promoting merchandise, comic strip writing and modelling for sport fashion and technical equestrian features. A special interest in digitising archival content led to partnerships with publishers in USA and Japan.

Kelly worked with top riders Lucinda Fredericks, Andrew Nicholson, Mark Todd, Anna Ross, Holly Smith as well as many of the leading brands and companies in sport and equestrianism, developing a strong network of contacts. A year long diary on the inside back cover with Mary King meant Kelly called the sporting legend every Sunday night – often catching Mary as she waited in her lorry for the ferry on her long drive back to her Devon base from competitions abroad.

Going freelance in 2012 allowed Kelly to pursue her British Horse Society qualifications, attaining Assistant Instructor and Stable Management examinations through Wellington Riding and to take on a Writer-at-large position with Horse&Rider. Kelly now spends time organising shoots to produce series and features on topics within equestrian sport, industry and lifestyle close to her heart.
